Best photoshoot locations in Tenerife

From black sand beaches to laurel forest, a local photographer’s guide to the places that look best in photos, the light to aim for and what to know before you go.

One small island, many different backdrops

Tenerife packs black sand, cliffs, forest and snow-topped volcano landscapes into a short drive. That is the good news. The hard part is choosing, because the island has different weather, different light and different crowds depending on where you are and when.

I live in the north-west, near Puerto de la Cruz, and I photograph across the island. Below are the places I recommend, grouped by type, each with the best light, who it suits and one practical note. Every place listed is public, so you can also visit on your own. If you would rather skip the research, send me your hotel area and date and I will pick for you. Prices are on the packages page.

Beach photoshoot Tenerife

Black sand beaches of the north

Dark sand, white surf and green cliffs: the north coast is where Tenerife looks most like itself. Clouds are more frequent here than in the south, and they often give soft, even light.

San Marcos beach, Icod de los Vinos

A small, sheltered bay with dark sand and cliffs around it. It is close to where I live, so I know how the light moves here.

Best light:
Late afternoon to sunset, or early morning for empty sand.
Suits:
Couples, families and short sessions.
Good to know:
There is a seafront with cafés; it gets busy at midday in high season.

Playa del Bollullo, La Orotava

A wilder beach below the cliffs, with strong surf and a feeling of being far from everything.

Best light:
Soft morning or evening light, when the cliffs cast long shadows.
Suits:
Adventurous couples and portraits.
Good to know:
You reach it on foot, so wear comfortable shoes. Waves can be strong, so we stay away from the water when needed.

Playa Jardín, Puerto de la Cruz

Black sand with palms, gardens and a designed, calm promenade, a gentler beach look.

Best light:
Golden hour and overcast days both work well.
Suits:
Families, maternity and relaxed sessions.
Good to know:
Easy to reach and good for people who prefer little walking.

Volcanic coast

Volcanic rock coast and natural pools

Textured lava rock, tide pools and rough waves make strong, cinematic backdrops, especially in black and white.

Garachico

Dark lava formations and natural sea pools, with the old town just behind the coast.

Best light:
Morning and late afternoon, when the rocks have warm colour and depth.
Suits:
Couples, portraits and anyone who likes a bolder look.
Good to know:
Swell changes everything here. On rough days the pools are not safe, so we choose another spot.

Sunset photoshoot Tenerife

Sunset spots on the west and south-west coast

The west-facing coast is the classic choice for a sunset photoshoot in Tenerife. Open horizon, warm colours and often more sunshine than the north.

Los Gigantes cliffs and viewpoints

Tall, dark cliffs drop into the Atlantic, and the viewpoints above give you sea, rock and sky in one frame.

Best light:
The hour before sunset and the minutes after it.
Suits:
Couples, proposals and sunset portraits.
Good to know:
Viewpoints get crowded at sunset, so we arrive early and keep the session short and focused.

South Tenerife

The south: Adeje and La Tejita

The south is sunnier and drier than the north, and it is where many visitors stay. Staying in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos or Las Américas? I come to you, and travel to one location is included in the price.

Playa de La Tejita, El Médano

A long, wide beach of natural golden sand at the foot of Montaña Roja, a small red volcanic cone. Open sky, plenty of space and a very different look from the black sand of the north.

Best light:
Golden hour, or early morning for a quiet beach.
Suits:
Couples, families and relaxed, wide-open sessions.
Good to know:
It is often windy here, as El Médano is known for windsurfing and kitesurfing, so bring a light layer. Montaña Roja is a protected nature reserve, so we stay on the beach and the marked paths.

Costa Adeje

The resort coast of south-west Tenerife, with sandy beaches and seafront promenades close to many hotels. A good choice if you would rather not travel far for your session.

Best light:
The hour before sunset. This coast faces west, so the evening light is warm.
Suits:
Couples and families staying nearby, and short sessions.
Good to know:
It is a busy resort area, so we avoid the crowded midday hours and look for a quieter stretch of sand.

Green Tenerife

Laurel forest in Anaga Rural Park

Mist, moss and ancient trees, a completely different Tenerife from the beaches. Anaga is protected, so we respect the paths and any rules that apply.

Anaga Rural Park

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with green ridges, mist and forest trails that feel magical and calm.

Best light:
Morning, when mist and sunbeams move through the trees.
Suits:
Hikers, portraits and couples who want something different.
Good to know:
The weather can change quickly. We check current access rules and conditions before choosing a trail.

Old towns

Old towns: La Laguna and Garachico

Colourful facades, balconies and cobbled streets work on any kind of day, including cloudy ones.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna

A UNESCO World Heritage city with colonial houses, courtyards and doors in strong colours.

Best light:
Morning, or an overcast day, when the streets are quiet and the light is even.
Suits:
Families, couples and city-style portraits.
Good to know:
It is often cooler and greyer than the coast, so bring a light layer.

Garachico old town

Small squares, stone streets and a historic harbour, all within walking distance.

Best light:
Late afternoon, with warm light on the facades.
Suits:
Relaxed sessions and families.
Good to know:
Combine it with the natural pools nearby for two looks in one session.
Low cloud rolling over red-brown volcanic hills with sparse scrub

Volcanic landscape

Teide National Park

Lava fields, red rock and huge skies around Mount Teide make a dramatic, almost lunar backdrop.

Teide National Park

Unusual colours and scale that you cannot find on the coast.

Best light:
Early morning or late afternoon, when the light is low and warm and the crowds are thinner.
Suits:
Adventurous couples and portraits.
Good to know:
This is a protected area with its own rules, and it is cold at altitude. We will check current access rules before planning a session there.

How I choose your location

There is no single best spot. The right place depends on three things.

  • Where you are staying

I start from your hotel area, so you spend your time on the session and not in the car. A good spot is often closer than you think.

  • Time of day

Golden hour is the classic choice, and early morning gives you quiet beaches. Midday is for forests, old towns and open shade.

  • Wind and clouds, north versus south

The north is greener and often cloudier, which gives soft light. The south and south-west are sunnier and drier. On the day, I check the forecast and move the session to the side of the island with the better conditions. My Tenerife photoshoot page shows what a session looks like.

FAQ

Locations: good to know

Which is the best beach for a photoshoot in Tenerife?
It depends on the look you want. For dark sand and dramatic waves I like the north coast, for example San Marcos or Playa Jardín. For golden sunsets over the sea I usually suggest the west coast. Tell me where you are staying and I will recommend the best fit for your date.
Can we shoot in the Teide National Park or Anaga?
Both are wonderful, but they are protected areas with their own rules. Before we plan a session there, I check the current access rules, and I will suggest an alternative if they do not fit your plans.
